The top 5 foods your shouldn’t feed your dog

by Marie Jones

Many of the foods we consider healthy for us to eat can actually be very dangerous and even fatal to our four-legged friends.

To ensure your pet stays happy and healthy, here is our list of the top five foods you should never feed your dog:

1. Cooked Bones

Although dogs love them, cooked bones can be quite dangerous for dogs. This is because they often splinter when eaten and the sharp pieces of bone can rupture your dog’s digestive tract.

2. Grapes, Raisins & Sultanas

Many people don’t realise grapes, raisins and sultanas are toxic to dogs in both cooked and raw forms. The active ingredient which causes the toxicity is not known, however they can potentially cause fatal kidney damage to your dog.

3. Chocolate

Chocolate contains a theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Ingesting even a small amount of chocolate can cause digestive, neurological and cardiac problems for your dog.

4. Corn on the Cob

Dogs love to chew on corn cobs, but they tend to eat the entire cob or large pieces of it. This can cause intestinal obstruction, a serious and possibly fatal condition.

5. Macadamia Nuts

Although macadamia nuts are quite a healthy snack for us to eat, they are toxic to dogs. They can cause neurological problems such as weakness and tremors.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY DOG HAS EATEN ONE OF THESE FOODS?

Contact your vet straight away if you are concerned that your dog has ingested any of these foods, or any other foods that you are unsure of. Your pet has a greater chance of recovery the earlier you can get them treatment.
